Planning Approval to extend New Forest locally listed cob cottage

Planning permission granted to extend New Forest cob cottage in the Brockenhurst Conservation area.

We are delighted to announce that planning permission has been granted for a single storey contemporary extension by the New Forest National Park Authority, marking a significant milestone for a much-loved historic property in the heart of the Brockenhurst Conservation Area.

Throughout the process, the team have worked hand in hand with the planning officers and conservation team at the New Forest National Park Authority. This close collaboration allowed for open dialogue, balancing the needs of modern living with the conservation principles that safeguard Brockenhurst’s historic character.

The scheme has been carefully developed throughout RIBA Work stage 0-3 to ensure minimal intervention, with a strong emphasis on preservation, repair, and sensitive detailing. The chosen materials to the extension have been sensitively considered to ensure subservience to the cottage’s original construction, while enhancing its long-term sustainability.

Situated in one of the New Forest’s most picturesque and historically significant villages, the cob cottage holds a special place in the character of Brockenhurst. The approved scheme demonstrates how contemporary architectural input can respect, rather than overshadow, heritage assets. The design responds to the cottage’s scale, setting, and materials, ensuring that the building continues to contribute positively to the conservation area.
